I believe the answer is: Krakauer compares his climb and McCandless' attempt to live in the wilderness both as mind clearing experiences that helped them escape their realities

He believed that society that most people face this day tend to cause a high amount of pressure and stress which wouldn't normally exist in our natural states.
Going out to the wilderness would help people to escape the pressure and recharge their psychological condition so they can perform better when they come back.
