I believe the answer is: Compared to the British colonists, the French population was relatively low.

Due to amount of soldiers available at their command, the british colonists can afford to went into confrontation with the natives without compromising their national defense. The french did not possess the same luxury as the british empire had, which force them to choose non-confrontational approach.
