An adjusting entry debiting supplies expense and crediting supplies is an example of adjusting an accrued expense. When you have an accrued expense, the expense is recognized in the books before it is actually paid for. In regards to supplies, this is how you would initially adjust accounts because you know supplies need to be purchased, but until they are, it's difficult to determine the exact expense to budget for.
