In October 1859, John Brown led a group of abolitionists on a raid to target military arsenal at Harper's Ferry. This raid occurred because it was intended to increase the number of freed slaves in the mountains. Although John Brown was caught and hanged, the raid caused many slave rebellions and eventually led to the start of the American Civil War.
