Total length of the clay snake = [tex]9 \frac{5}{8}[/tex] inches

The length of the clay snake which broke off = [tex]1 \frac{7}{8}[/tex] inches

We have to determine the length of the clay snake after broke off.

So, length of the clay snake = [tex]9 \frac{5}{8} - 1 \frac{7}{8}[/tex]

= [tex]\frac{77}{8} - \frac{15}{8}[/tex]

LCM is 8

= [tex]\frac{77-15}{8}[/tex]

= [tex]\frac{62}{8}[/tex]

= [tex]7 \frac{6}{8}[/tex] inches.

Therefore, the length of the clay snake now is [tex]7 \frac{6}{8}[/tex] inches.
