how do you solve this equation: 5w – 4w + 4 = 14 ?

First combine the like terms 5w and -4w to get just w.
so now the problem looks like:
 
w + 4= 14

subtract 4 from each side now. and you get the answer:

w = 10

First multiply five times two, which equals ten. Then, multiply four times zero which equals zero. Finally add four and you get fourteen.
