A man bought some secondhand furniture for 2/3 of what it cost new. He paid $400 for it. How much did it cost new?

Answer: $600

Step-by-step explanation: The $400 is 2 portions of an original 3 of the new piece of furniture.  Each "portion" is $200 ($400 divided by 2).  So all 3 portions of the new item is $600 ($200 x 3)
