The Norwegian Nobel Committee decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2012 was to be awarded to the European Union (EU) because the union and its forerunners had contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe for over six decades hence they deserved an award.
