Louis Riel was born on 22 October 1844 and died on 16 November 1885. He was a Canadian politician and he found the province of Manitoba. He led two rebellions against the government of Canada and its first prime minister. He wanted to preserve Metis rights and culture. He was made a folk hero and he receives more attention than any other figure from Canada's history.
