How many bases in DNA are needed to code for a single amino acid?

Each adjacent group of three DNA bases codes for a single amino acid. Since there are four bases, there are 64 possible triplets (“codons”) that, in total, code for 20 amino acids. That means that some amino acids are coded for by more than one triplet sequence.
