Answer:

Hi! The answer is that Ellen couldn't marry John and rejected him because he defined himself in sort way as a radical transcendentalism, and the father of her didn't approve that view of living. Ellen couldn't be her wife because of the decision of her father, he didn't like the Thoreau's brothers.
