Why would the author begin a story focusing on a happy time in bucks life if it will soon change

An author would do this to display either irony, or to show how drastic of a shift it was from happy to what it shifts to.

If you know from the beginning that Buck’s life will end terribly, then it could be used as a method to reel readers in. “How will this take a turn?”
