The ratio of boys to girls in a group is 5:1. If there are 60 more boys than girls, work out how many people there are in total.

Answer:

The number of boys: a

The number of girls: b

=> a/b = 5

   a - b = 60

=> (b + 60)/b = 5

=> b + 60 = 5b

=> 4b = 60 => b = 15 => a = 5 x 15 = 75

=> Total people:

T = a + b = 15 + 75 = 90
