The plague arrived in Europe in October 1347, when 12 ships from the Black Sea docked at the Sicilian port of Messina.  The Black Death was in large part spread by human fleas. The Black Death earned its name from a symptom: lymph nodes that became blackened and swollen after bacteria entered through the skin.
