How are the number of protons and electrons related to the charge of an ion?​

Protons have a positive charge, electrons are negative; say theres 5 protons and 5 electrons, those cancel each other out therefore it would be neutral or just no charge. If there is more protons then electrons then it would be a positive ion, if there is more electrons then protons then it would be a negative ion
