The ONE reason that might not support one to believe that Moctezuma, the Aztec Emperor, welcomed the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés is that instead of embracing the welcome, Hernán Cortés held the Emperor hostage.

This use of naked force subdued the Moctezuma to finally allow the Spanish some space in the Aztec kingdom.

Thus, according to history, the Aztecs were not happy over Montezuma's subservience to the Spanish rule, leading to his murder.
