you can add, subtract, multiply, and divide things on both sides of the equation as long as you do the same thing to the other side so 
if i add n to this side 

1-n+n

i must add it to the other side 

1-n+n= 7/12 +n

1=7/12 + n 
 
 now you must subtract the 7/12 from both sides

1 - 7/12= 7/12 - 7 /12 + n 

5/12= n
