What does a ziggurat look like? What was it used for?

Ziggurats were basically temple home of the favorite god of a certain Sumerian city. In the most powerful Sumerian cities Ziggurats were high terraced pyramids, each story being smaller than the one below. Three long staircases led to the temple at the very top.
