Davis believed in paternalism, which was the belief that European-Americans had the spiritual and moral responsibility to serve a parental role to slaves and thus viewed slavery as a positive aspect of American culture and was a form of a “form of civil government for those who by their nature are not fit to govern themselves." he believed in the legality of slavery
