Answer:

The Byzantines most likely modified it and upgraded old tools and other instruments by the Romans using it as some sort of headstart to their own technology.

Explanation:

I haven't learned about this in a while but if i remember correctly they should've just modified the Roman's technology. Many other cultures or people would've done this with the technology from the people before them as well so it'd be only natural.
