The Coriolis Effect

An air mass flowing from the North Pole to the equator (shown in green) is deflected to its right in the Northern Hemisphere, due to the rotation of the earth. Warm, dense, high-pressure air masses tend to flow away from the equator towards cool, less dense, low-pressure air masses at the poles.
