Cells run on chemical energy – specifically, the small amount temporarily stored in ATP molecules. Cellular respiration transfers chemical energy from a fuel molecule – glucose – to many usable molecules of ATP.

Specifically, during cellular respiration, the energy stored in glucose is transferred to ATP (Figure below). ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, is chemical energy the cell can use.
