A simile is a figure of speech where you use words such as like or as to show a comparison between two or more things.
Here, the simile "like some unemployed janitor who'd gone to Reno and won a million-dollar jackpot" is used to denote happiness and ecstasy at winning something unexpectedly, which happened to the hunter and his 'trophy" in the novel.
