Let the number = x


add -20’tonx to have x + -20 which becomes x-20

That equals 8 times the number x

The equation becomes

X-20 = 8x

Subtract x from both sides :

-20 = 7x

Divide both sides by 7:

X = -20/7


The number is -20/7
