The plates beneath the Earth's surface are moving and also colliding with one another. These collisions cause compression of the rocks, resulting in the production of stress. Faults form and spread when the rocks can be compressed no more and they "break". This breakage releases energy and the energy is felt as seismic waves in an earthquake.
