Equation 1)  2x + 3y = 40
Equation 2)  -2x + 2y = 20

Add equations together.

5y = 60

Divide both sides by 5.

y = 12

Plug in 12 for y in the first equation.

2x + 3y = 40

2x + 3(12) = 40

Simplify.

2x + 36 = 40

Subtract 36 from both sides.

2x = 40 - 36

Simplify.

2x = 4

Divide both sides by 2.

x = 2

x = 2, y = 12
