In "we wear the mask" by paul laurence dunbar, the tone can be described as bitter. The tone of the poem not only can be described as bitter, I would say  that author set very angry tone, he is angry about having to hide begind a mask, to avoid showing people's emotions. The last lines from the poem maintain authors negative opinion towards this conflict:  "We wear the mask!"
