Why did Alexander destroy Thebes?

Alexander destroyed Thebes because he was using it as an example to other Greeks of what would happen if they turned against him.

It was one of his steps to taking control of the entire empire. They had challenged and since he defeated Thebes the lesson became clear that the Greeks would NOT turn against him.
