What happened to colonial citizens who supported the British after the Revolutionary War?

While there was no set punishment given by the American government Loyalist often felt unsafe and had to flee the colonies. Those that did stay were treated harshly some were tarred and feather, beaten, harassed. Those that were quite loyalist were too bothered and lied low especially when it came to politics.
