Why do polar compounds tend to have higher melting boiling points than nonpolar compounds?

Because substances with hydrogen bonding will have much higher melting and boiling points than substances with ordinary dipole-dipole forces. Non-polar molecules have the lowest melting and boiling points because they are held together by the weak van der Waals forces.
