The algae living in the tissues of coral animals are called photosynthetic algae. The purpose of the the photosynthetic algae is to produce oxygen and help the coral to remove wastes. Coral on the other side provides the algae with a protected environment and compounds they need for photosynthesis. The algae supply the coral with the product from the photosynthesis which are glucose, glycerol, and amino acids.
