The cause was that the people in the Pueblos had been living under tyrannical rule by the Spanish officials who even at one point arrested over 40 medicine-men for practicing "sorcery". The effect was that the Spaniards were driven out for a while, but when they returned they retook the territory and didn't have people to oppose them at that time.
