Two jets leave an air base at the same and travel in opposite directions. One jet travels 83 mi/h faster than the other. If the two jets are 3939 mi apart after 3 hours, what is the rate of each jet?

Let s be the speed of the slower plane; and s+83 be the speed of the faster one. Then:
3s+3(s+83)=3939
6s=3690
s=615
