how has timbuktu changed between the year 1400 and today

In the years of 1400s, Timbuktu was regarded as one of the most richest city in the world because it's used as a trade center for popular commodities such as Salt, Gold, and Ivory.
Now, this city no longer serve the same purpose at that time, and even considered on of the poorest city in the world.
