Because Parables were commonplace in Chaucer's time, and audiences would have found them familiar.
Parables is a verse of story that contains some deeper meaning behind it that could be used as some sort of a life lesson.
During Chaucer's times of writing the Monk's tale,  Christianity is in its flourishing period, and many preachers use parables to convey the teaching to the people
