A conglomerate wants diversification because when the market for one of their products is weak (as market winds change), they can rely on the strength of other parts of their business to drive profit margins until market winds change and the other product starts improving. They can also use the funds from strong areas of business to help drive innovation in their weak businesses, and hopefully turn things around.
