Do you think the government is right to take away someone's property if it just pays compensation

It depends...

For instance, suppose the government wishes to make an area a world heritage site, and pays a fair price for land surrounding someone's property. That would be a justifiable use. 

If the government wanted to knock someone's house down to build a holiday resort that the developers were paying the government to help with, not so much.
