How did geography affect the development of Japan and set it apart from its neighbors?

Japan is found on an archipelago or chain of islands. It comprises of four main islands and thousands of smaller ones. The land is mountainous, meaning there is not a portion of good land for agriculture. Because of the geography, the Japanese trusted on the sea for many phases of daily life. Also, warm climate and adequate rainfall assisted farmers make the most of the inadequate arable land.
