The second of two numbers is 3 less than twice the first. Their sum is 36. Find the numbers.

The first number = x
The 
second number = 2x-3

x + 2x-3 = 36
3x = 36+3
3x = 39
x = 39/3
x = 13

The first number = x = 13
The second number = 2x-3 = 2*13 - 3 = 26 - 3 = 23
