I believe that a mutation which causes production of a defective pilus in a bacterium will prevent conjugation. Mutations are spontaneous random changes that occur in the genetic make up of an organism. Conjugation is the transfer of genetic material between bacterial cells by direct cell to cell contact or by a connection between two cells using special structures called pilus. Thus a mutation that produces a defective pilus will impair the process of conjugation.
