Benedict's test can be used to test for simple carbohydrates. This test allows to identify reducing sugar. This sugars have ketones and aldehyde functional groups. This test can also be used to identify presence of sugar in urine. The red brick reaction of test is caused by the reducing property of simple carbohydrates. The copper ions in Benedict's solution are reduced to Coppe (I) ions resulting in change in color.
