To answer this you will use the Pythagorean theorem to find the side length of the small square. Diagonal GD is the same as AG. Please see the picture I have attached.

The second step would be to use the side lengths to find the area of the big square and the area of the small square. Subtract these to get your answer.

The answer is 24 in.².
