 the Chinese had monopolized the trade in silk making it very expensive, to the weight of gold. The roman emperor believed that this silk, which had rose to a luxurious commodity status in the empire was taking away too much of the empires gold. the Chinese monopoly of silk was such severe that in china the emperor had banned the export of silkworm or silk eggs.
