U.S. tax laws allow people to be taxed at different rates because many people make different amounts of money. If lower, middle, and upper class people were to all pay the same amount the poor people would be poorer and the rich people would be richer. The gaps between those classes would be larger, and poor people would have less say in how their tax dollars are used.
